The artnet Price Database offers the most comprehensive archive of auction results in the world, and is host to over 10 million lots spanning more than 30 years. It is a valuation tool used by appraisers, dealers, and collectors, allowing users to make informed decisions about buying or selling art. Each lot is catalogued, translated, and edited by an in-house team of multilingual specialists, making it an invaluable asset to anyone following the international auction market.

Read on for five key facts from the Price Database for the month of May:

1

Pablo Picasso was the most popular artist at auction in May, with 291 works offered at 53 auction houses worldwide. Surprisingly, he was not the top-selling artist—that title goes to Jean-Michel Basquiat.

2

Christie’s New York came in on top with the highest sales total in May. They offered 1,180 lots at auction with a sell-through rate of 76.95% for a whopping $717,761,750 in sales.

3

Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Untitled (1982), from Christie’s New York’s Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale on May 10, set a new record for the artist and became the highest-priced Basquiat of all time.

4

This past month, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Marc Chagall were the top three artists most searched in the Price Database. To find works by all three artists, look to Wright’s Prints + Multiples auction on June 23.
