Pablo Picasso was the most popular artist at auction in May, with 291 works offered at 53 auction houses worldwide. Surprisingly, he was not the top-selling artist—that title goes to Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Christie’s New York came in on top with the highest sales total in May. They offered 1,180 lots at auction with a sell-through rate of 76.95% for a whopping $717,761,750 in sales.

Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Untitled (1982), from Christie’s New York’s Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale on May 10, set a new record for the artist and became the highest-priced Basquiat of all time.
